Fun Palace at Leyland Library

LIB1

On the 7th October, members of Leyland U3A helped support Lancashire County Council to run their first Fun Palace at Leyland Library.

Ten members from the UkeLeylanders played a selection of songs during their 90 minute slot. Brenda Strobie and Dave Hambley from the Art Group showed their skill in a Watercolour Masterclass. We also had Pauline Worthington and Kim Whittle from the Craft and Hobbies Group helping out keeping the younger visitors entertained.

Following the event I received the email from Lisa Halpin Library Frontline Officer – Leyland Library

Hi Ian,

Wow what a day!

Please pass on my thanks to all of your wonderful U3A members who gave up their time and shared their skills to make our Fun Palace such a wonderful success!

It was so lovely to see all the families taking part in activities and enjoying the music – the atmosphere in the library was amazing and we’ve had so much positive feedback from everyone enjoying the day. I really feel that the community came together to get involved and have fun which is what it’s all about!

Thank you again, I really feel that you were the key to the whole day starting to come together as you also suggested and encouraged other groups to get involved too.

Many, many thanks,

Lisa

October Monthly Speaker

17 10

On 11 October, the speaker at Leyland U3A monthly meeting was Mr Neil Smith who “Had Guitar & Travelled”.  Not someone I would have volunteered to travel with : as he was both unlucky and found himself in many dangerous situations, as well as meeting many stars in fabulous hotels. A lead guitarist from the 1960s he missed out on a Hamburg tour with the Beatles and other Mersey greats and marriage to an American heiress. He was almost shot in Ireland, Russia, Greece and Transylvania. On the other hand he played at private functions for Elizabeth Taylor & Sophia Loren. No one could accuse Neil of leading a boring life and his entertaining talk was punctuated by guitar pieces in styles ranging from flamenco to rockabilly.

Visit to Bury Market

Great trip to Bury Market on Friday 21 April. All went smoothly, in the capable hands of  Dave (driving) & Jenny & Keith (organising). Jenny even got free shopping bags for everyone- kudos!  Not just Black puddings, but an  amazing variety of goods for sale.  Loads of bargains in meat, fish, fruit & veg, material & sewing items and all kinds of everything. Reminded me of the shop content in Sids poem. Bought as much as I could carry (with a little help)  Let us know how you cook the kerala (strange spiky vegetable) & whether it is delicious Maureen.  Will definitely revisit.

Visit to Dewlay Cheese & Garstang

Click on images to view larger

A  large group of Leyland U3A members went on an outing today, first to Dewlay cheese at Garstang for a talk. tour & tasting and then to the town & markets.

The day began with brews & biscuits and we were told about Dewlay by the  enthusiastic, knowledgeable and cheese-loving Jane.  The founder George Kenyon, from Wigan, wanted a name that indicated quality food. Dewlay was how he thought  Du Lait , the French for “from milk “was written and the name stuck. Dewlay now produces top quality products from locally sourced milk. They make 5 basic cheeses, Lancs crumbly, creamy, tasty, white & Garstang  blue, all of which  are  totally vegetarian,  unlike eg Parmesan.  We saw the cheese being made. Turning the curds involved. very heavy manual work. Also Prince Charles personal Earl Grey teapot, which he left behind on Tuesday. We were given 2 generous boards of cheese to sample – we should have taken bread to make sandwiches.

We then went in Garstang had lunch and bought lots of shoes

Thanks to Ann France for her hard work in organising this successful trip.
